Mayor Thao is one of the Bay Area’s strongest and most effective progressive leaders. Her family story - escaping genocide, poverty, and abuse - has made her into a determined, empathetic leader. Her commitment to racial justice, building affordable housing, advocating for low-wage workers, and protecting tenants can be seen in her many accomplishments as a City Council member and will drive her work to improve the lives of Oakland residents as Oakland’s 51st Mayor.

Born and raised in Stockton, CA, Mayor Thao grew up in poverty as the daughter of Hmong refugees. Her family used social services and lived in public housing. She left home at 17, and in her early 20s found herself in an abusive relationship, isolated from her family, and pregnant. She escaped this domestic violence, but soon had a baby and no permanent housing. For months, she and her son Ben slept on couches or in her car. When Ben was 10 months old, she got a job at a local community college and started taking classes. With the help of welfare and a Head Start program for her son, she put herself through school. She became class valedictorian, then transferred to UC Berkeley, where she co-founded a food access program for low-income students and graduated with a degree in legal studies.

Shortly after graduating, she got a job as a legislative aide for an Oakland City Councilmember and worked her way up to Chief of Staff. In 2018, she ran for City Council District 4 and won, becoming the first Hmong-American Councilmember in California history. As a Councilmember, she bridged political divides to make progress on many key issues. In the last budget, she brought the Council together to make historic investments in violence prevention programs while also ensuring funding for three new police academies. Last year, Mayor Thao negotiated a historic agreement between organized labor and the Oakland business community to modernize the city’s business tax structure and secure millions in new revenue for public services.

Natasha Singer

The New York Times

Natasha Singer is a technology reporter at The New York Times where she writes about the far-reaching ways that tech companies and their tools are reshaping public schools, higher education and job opportunities. She is currently writing a book, called "Coding Kids," on the growth of computer science in U.S. public schools.

Natasha was recently a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the summers, she teaches a course on tech accountability journalism for high school students attending The School of The New York Times, the newspaper's pre-college program.

In 2018, she was a member of a Times reporting team that won a George Polk Award and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in national reporting for their coverage of online tracking and privacy. Her earlier reporting on the data-mining of students helped prompt California to enact the Student Online Personal Information Protection Act of 2014, a landmark law that limits the use of student data by school vendors.

Mitch Kapor is a pioneer of the personal computing industry and long-time startup investor. He founded Lotus Development Corporation and designed Lotus 1-2-3, the “killer application” which made the personal computer ubiquitous in the business world in the 1980s. He co-founded The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which protects freedom and privacy on the Internet, and served as the founding Chair of Mozilla, creator of the Firefox web browser.

His successful early investments in the Internet sector, and in streaming media and virtual reality earned him a reputation for seeing around corners.

Along with his wife, Freada Kapor Klein, PhD., for over a decade at Kapor Capital Mitch and Freada have developed a vision and practice of investing in tech startups that close gaps of access, opportunity, or outcome for low-income communities and communities of color, and in founders from underrepresented groups.

Through the work of the Kapor Center, Mitch and Freada take a comprehensive approach to removing barriers in education and the workplace for all, fixing the leaks at every stage of the tech pipeline. Mitch serves on the board of SMASH, a non-profit founded by Freada to help underrepresented scholars hone their STEM knowledge while building the networks and skills for careers in tech and the sciences.

Mitch and Freada, are co-authors of Closing the Equity Gap, which identifies how to create wealth while simultaneously addressing the inequalities in startup investing.

Freada Kapor Klein

Freada Kapor Klein is an entrepreneur, activist, and pioneer in the field of organizational culture and diversity.

As a Founding Partner at Kapor Capital, Freada invests in seed-stage tech startups that create positive social impact by closing gaps of access, opportunity, or outcome for low-income communities and communities of color. The companies solve actual problems, aspiring to simultaneously generate economic value and positive social impact. Often the founders are drawing on their lived experiences to create businesses that address real needs.

She is the founder of SMASH, now in its 20th year, which provides rigorous STEM education and access to social capital for low-income high school students of color on 10 university campuses across the country.

Freada’s initial job in tech was as the first head of Employee Relations, Organizational Development, and Management Training at Lotus Development Corporation. Her job description was to make Lotus the “most progressive employer in the U.S.” Lotus 1-2-3 is widely recognized as the “killer app” that made the personal computer ubiquitous in business.

In 1976, she co-founded the Alliance Against Sexual Coercion, the first organization in the U.S. to address sexual harassment. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Policy and Research from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University; and has conducted numerous large survey projects on perceptions and experiences of bias, harassment, and disrespectful treatment in workplaces.

Freada is a member of the Obama Foundation Tech Policy Council, the U.C. Berkeley Board of Visitors, and the council that formed the Hollywood Commission chaired by Anita Hill. She serves on the advisory boards of Twilio.org, Generation Investment Management, and Trident; is a board observer at Aclima.io, a tech startup focusing on hyperlocal air quality monitoring, and serves on the NAACP National Board of Directors.

Freada and her husband, Mitch Kapor, are co-authors of Closing the Equity Gap, which identifies how to create wealth while simultaneously addressing the inequalities in startup investing. She is also the author of Giving Notice, which details the human and financial cost of hidden bias in the workplace.

Nabiha Syed is the CEO of The Markup, a media nonprofit that challenges technology to serve the public good. Forbes has called Nabiha "one of the best emerging free speech lawyers" and in 2023, she was honored by the NAACP with their Digital Civil Rights award.

Under her leadership, The Markup's pioneering data-driven journalism was named by FastCompany as a World Changing Idea and a Most Innovative Company. Previously, Nabiha served as Vice President and Associate General Counsel at BuzzFeed, as the company's first newsroom lawyer navigating high-stakes litigation, and as the First Amendment Fellow at The New York Times. She has worked on legal access issues at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, represented asylum-seekers in south Texas, counseled on whether to publish leaked and hacked materials, co-founded the nation's first media law clinic, and spoken widely about misinformation and propaganda, including to two sitting presidents. For her work, Nabiha has been named as a "Rising Star" by the New York Law Journal and received an inaugural Reporter's Committee for the Freedom of the Press Award. She holds a B.A. from Johns Hopkins, a J.D. from Yale Law School and another law degree from Balliol College, Oxford, which she attended as a Marshall Scholar.

Tawana Petty is a mother, poet, author, and facilitator. She is a long-time social justice organizer whose work focuses on racial justice, equity issues, data privacy, and consent. Petty has used her talents and gifts for community building to dispel the criminalizing narrative of her city, Detroit, which has convinced many of the need for mass surveillance technologies as mechanisms for public safety. She is the founding director of Petty Propolis, a Black women-led artist incubator and social justice organization that teaches writing and antiracism workshops, hosts artist retreats, and organizes an artist festival in historic Idlewild, Michigan.

Petty is an alumni fellow of the Digital Civil Society Lab at Stanford PACS, the Detroit Equity Action Lab, and Art Matters. She has also been a convening member of the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition since 2016. Petty has been honored with several awards. She was honored with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition and with Wayne State University’s Center for Peace and Conflict Studies Peacemaker Award in 2018.

In 2021, she was named one of 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics. In 2023, Petty was honored with the AI Policy Leader in Civil Society Award by the Center for AI and Digital Policy, as an Ava Jo Silent Shero by the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, and with the Detroit People’s Platform’s Racial Justice Leadership Award. Petty was also named as one of seven Just Tech Fellows by the Social Science Research Council for 2023-2025.

Joseph is a second-year Computer Science at Brandeis University. He is a Google Generation Scholar, a Google Code Next Scholar, and received a full four-year scholarship from the Posse Foundation as a STEM scholar. Joseph is an extremely talented programmer, having built a number of independent projects from Roblox games with hundreds of thousands of plays in elementary school, to using AI to autonomously generate virtual environments for immersive 3D gaming.
